_________________ ![HMS HANNIBAL 1/96 (Predreadnought) DEAN'S MARINE - Page 9 <a href=](<a href=) | |

| TEXTE ORIGINAL
At the end of the nineteenth century the wordl's major nations measured their power in terms of the number of battleships in ther fleets. Battleships were the most powerful warships afloat and no other tupe of vessels couls hope to stand up to one in a fight. As it was sea power which allowed a noation to exert its influence all around the world, battleships were looked on in much the same way as nuclear missiles are today. When HMS MAJESTIC and her sistership HMS MAGNIFICENT were completed in 1895 theyrepresented a revolution in the fighting capabilities of thes ships.
They took advantage of several scientific developpements which had occured during the 1880's.
The first was the invention of the HARVEY type armour in whinch the armour plates were made from one piece of steel with a hard face ans a soft back. This was much more resistant to penetration than the earlier types which had to be made from two pieces of steel, one hard one soft, riveted together. The great increase in resistance allowed the new armour to be much thinner for the same degree of protection. This meant that more of it could be carried for the same weight so the armour belt protecting the ship's vital could be longer and deeper.
The second major improvement was the dévelopment by Vikers of much higher velocity 12 inch gun. This could not outrange the 13.5 inch fitted in recent British ships but could hit harder and had a higher rate of fire. AS the new shell was lighter ans smaller than the old, more ammunition could be carried without having to increase the size of the ship. Also the gunnery field came quick-firing guns ans telescopic gunsights. The former doubled the rate of fire from the intermediate gun battery and the later more than doubled the range at which all guns could be used effectively.
In 1893 nine new battleships were ordered incorparating the new tecnologies. This was mainly as a results of public concern over the expansion of others countries' navies, particularly the French and German.
The ships were known as the Majestic class after the firtst ship to be ordered and HMS HANNIBAL, the subject of this kit, was one of the last unit to be completed? She was commisionned in april 1898. She carried four of the new 12 inch guns, twelve 6 inch quick fires, eight 4 inch quick fires and numerous 6 pounders (most of these were removed later as beeing too small to be feccetive). Her main armour belt was 9 inches thick Harvey type, 220 feet long by 15 feet high with 9 feet 6 inches of this being above the waterline.
This was topped by a 3 inch thick protective deck over her magazines and machinery. Her reciprocating steam engines supplied by coal fired boilers were conventional for the time, also some of her boiler were converted in 1904 to burn oil as well. Top speed was 18 knots.
All subsequent British pre -Dreadnought were simply improved versions of the Majestic Type.
In 1907 the arrival on the scene of the HMS DREADNOUGHT meant the writing was on the wall for the Majestic and all other pre- Dreadnought although the "Dreadnoughts" did not reach their full potential fot an other four years when the director system of gun control came into general use. Hanniber herself remain in comission until 1915 when her 12 inch guns were removed and used to arm a shore bombardment monito. She was then used as depot ship.
She was sold to an Italian ship breaking firm in 1921 ans scrapped there. _________________ ![HMS HANNIBAL 1/96 (Predreadnought) DEAN'S MARINE - Page 9 <a href=](<a href=) | |
